What, if any, are the rules regarding references on job applications?

If a colleague agrees to be a reference then gets all psycho on you, are they legally bound to say positive things as long as your work is satisfactory- putting aside personal matters. I feel nervous that I put some bad references! Administrators, what is your take plese?

Update:

Just want to add that when the references were agreed, relationships were good. I am hoping I have recourse if I don't get a job based on a poor, untrue reference. If the file (I'm a teacher) is all satisfactory, then am I in the clear?

Only give references of people who like you. Nobody is obligated to say nice things about you if they don't actually feel that way.

Best references you need to put on your resume is college instructors, college advisors. Be sure you mention the college name in the resume and the GPA. Most employers look at GPA of your college. That's the main rules. References don't matter to employers, but important is your GPA and college's reputations.
