Front-load washer routine maintenance required?

I'm doing a little research on front-load washers. Our top-load died last night, may it rust in peace. I saw a comment that said there is a lot of maintenance that you need to do; that you have to clean out monthly to prevent a funk from growing inside it.

Is this true?

I don't know what that person was washing to grow a funk! I've had a front load (LG) pair for over 2 years and I love it. No special care or maintenance needs at all. The biggest (best) difference is how gentle it is on your cloths...Makes them last a lot longer! And because of the spin speed (of the washer) the clothes are nearly dry out of the washer, and require less time in the dryer. It also offers more capacity (nice for bulky item). They are also more energy efficient. learn from my mistake and measure your space before you buy, including the door (when open). Or look for a model that has a reversible door.

Where do you live, If you live some place that is humid the only thing you will have to do is leave to door open for a few hrs after you use it. You also might want to wipe the rubber seal with a towel to get rid of some left over water. Nothing that should take any more the 5 seconds to do.

Top Load washers use about 40 gallons of water per load

Front load washers use 10-20 gallons per load.

You can fit about 15 more things in the Front load washer.

So less loads and less water per load.

I've had mine for a couple of months now and I LOVE it. It does state to use specific laundry soap to keep it from over soaping and causing mildew. I use vinegar with every wash just because it will help keep it clean and I've read when using vinegar with any soap it helps the agents in the soap work better. I just follow the manufacture recommendations and we've even had to move it when we bought a new home and so far so good. But since it's new to me I'm curious to see other comments.

Well, I can't help you out a ton, but my sister, (who's husband is an appliance salesman) had a front loader...she's gets all the cool appliances!!...she hated it!! She switched back to the regular top loading...she didn't think they got the clothes as clean...

just thought I would let you know!!
