What is Trazodone prescribed for?
A friend of mine told me he was prescribed Trazodone for depression, and that one doctor wanted to put him on Lithium. He wouldn't tell me what sort of depression, but i know he has bad depressive periods where he has considered suicide - even when on Trazodone. Does anyone know what sort of depressive disorder Trazodone would be prescribed for? I kind of want to know what i'm dealing with before i get to know him better.

Trazadone is an extremely "old school" antidepressant most commonly prescribed now as a non-addictive sleeping agent. Lithium, similarly, is a very "old school" mood stabilizer (most typically prescribed to treat Bipolar disorder). My bet is that your friend saw either a general practitioner or an "old school" psychiatrist who is not up on the latest psychotropic treatment options.

I currently take 75mg of Trazodone every evening and have taken as much as 300mg. I find that I sleep pretty well and have never suffered any severe side effects. Trazadone is an antidepressant, but is primarily used in treating insomnia. You will find that every antidepressant has a set of side effects, including insomnia. But these side effects are not major and usually go away withing a few days to a week. From what you're experiencing, you may need to increase the dose. There may also be some underlying issues that are contributing to your insomnia that cannot be treated with Trazadone alone. For me, insomnia is a biproduct of certain mood disorders I have. If I left the mood disorders untreated, Trazadone would do little for my insomnia. Discuss these concerns with your Dr. and he/she may be able to either, increase the dosage or switch you to a safe alternative.

I was just prescribed it today. It is an anti depressant, but I take it for sleep. I wake up with anxiety, but when I take 150 mg of trazadone i sleep the whole night and there is no anxiety when I wake up. Don't be so concerned with the meds that your friend is taking. If you just met him and don't think you can deal with someone with depression be honest with yourself and don't lead him on. Those of us with depression are often very lonely and being in a good relationship would be helpful. If you have concerns, though, best to stay away.

Trazodone is prescribed to treat depression. It can take up to four weeks before there are improvements, but most patients notice improvement within two weeks.

Trazodone is an antidepressant.
(trade names Desyrel, Molipaxin, Trittico, Thombran, Trialodine) is a psychoactive compound with sedative, anxiolytic, and antidepressant properties. The manufacturer claims that the antidepressant activity becomes evident in the first week of therapy. Trazodone has less prominent anticholinergic (dry mouth, constipation, tachycardia) and adrenolytic (hypotension, male sexual problems) side effects than most tricyclic antidepressants. The incidence of nausea and vomiting observed with Trazodone is relatively low compared to many SSRIs.

Trazadone is also prescribed for anxiety and sleep. However, if his doctor wanted to put him on lithium he is probably bipolar. Which means he has periods of extreme low moods and periods of extremly high or "manic" moods.

it's an antidepressant but it is usually used for sleep because not many people can take the drug and stay awake. this fact was discoverd after it was used prescribed for clinical depression.
