Asking your family is generally free and usually easy. From there, nothing is free about this hobby except the public library, your state archive and the National Archives. I spent $35,000 over 20 years on one line of a tree in order to get records from behind the Iron Curtain before we knew that communism would fall. There are costs for the documents, the postage, the translators. There's travel from one state to another to look up records that are obscure but offer your only hope of finding the next generation. You've got telephone calls, processing charges for films at the LDS family history centers, and the occasional trip home to sweet talk Grandma into giving up more information that she forgot she ever knew.

Be smart, don't look at the price tag, look at the result. Take it slowly. The beauty of researching dead people is that they patiently stay put for us until we find them. You might find some free websites that are helpful, but they only point you in the right direction. Take nothing that they post as literal truth until you find the documents that prove their veracity.

In the meantime, trek down to your local library and start by using their resources...those really are free...and more comprehensive than you'll ever know.

There is nothing free and easy in genealogy if you want it done correctly. Genealogy is an expensive hobby due to the fact that the documents needed to prove your information do cost, sometimes up to $20 for a birth/death and marriage.

There are some sites you can look at that someone may have worked on the same line but you need to always prove the work. There is a lot of bad research out there.

If you're going to do your family tree correctly then plan on spending the money for the certificates. Cemetery info is usually free.

I suggest that you buy a book called "Unpuzzling your past" by Emily Croom. This will take you step by step in getting started. Visit your local LDS center and your local library. They can help you get started too

There are a few really good and free websites I have found with no catches and yeah It great, the first one is http://www.ancestry.com.au/search/rectype/trees/ow... I hope this leads to the right place because the website can be a bit hard to follow, but basically It's at Ancestry.com and searching under One World Tree, It's great because it is like searching a family tree of the world that never ends. there is also another great website I recommend it because you can download a family tree builder for free, you do have to sign up but no payment details or anything the website is http://www.myheritage.com/FP/Company/genealogy.php so basically It's My Heritage It also has some cool things on the website like face recognition to see what famous people you look like and It can also show you what famous people you are related to. the family search isn't as good on this site as the Ancestry one. Good Luck I hope this helps.

    You can't.

You can't lose weight while sitting in a recliner eating hot fudge sundaes.

You can't meet a warm, considerate, interesting, faithful, intelligent and witty woman at a singles bar.

You can't find a job with high wages that doesn't require lots of education (or practice), hard work and talent.

You can't pick stocks guaranteed to double overnight by having your hamster drop pellets on the Wall Street Journal.

You can't fly like Superman, even if you take a running start from the top of the barn and have a cape.

    Life is tough. Sorry.

Even if you see the same information over and over by different submitters in the family trees on any website, a lot of copying is being done. The information is not documented.
