A quick question, with quick best answer?

Do you fly the American flag at half mast this weekend? If so, all weekend or just on Monday? I want to do what's right.

Update:

It doesn't say, in the star spangled banner, how many stars and stripes were on the flag at that time. My flag history is not good. And for that I am saddened. (but it's not to late to learn)

Update 2:

Our flag is up 24/7, ever since 9-11, we have replaced it once, so far. One of our boys was home on leave and he showed us how to fold it. The flag is lit at night. We have no intention of ever taking it down, (except of course to replace it from time to time)

Well, first of all, unless you are on a ship, its "half-staff", but most people use half mast to include both ship and non-ship uses.

If you raise and lower your flag each day, which is the correct method (though its also acceptable to leave it up over night if its lighted), You should raise the flag to the top of the flag pole and pause for a moment before lowering it to approximately half staff. You should upon lowering the flag, raise it all the way to the top and pause again. Then lower it and remove it.

Memorial Day is an exception to this though. The flag should remain at half staff until noon, and then be raised to the top for the rest of the day.

Thank you for your respect of our flag.

Now a question for you. In "The Star Spangled Banner" there is a line "our flag was still there." How many stars were on that flag?

It seems to me that some of the rules are more important than others. To burn an old flag when its worn is to make sure that people don't throw them away where they might end up in a garbage dump or other disrespectful place.

I don't think anyone will find fault in flying a flag 24/7 and replacing it and destroying it when its worn. Your respect for the flag and all it represents is obvious. Honestly, mine flies 24/7 too. But its the first flag some people see each morning. That's important enough to bend the rules a little.

The president issued orders to the State Governments to fly the flags at half staff on Monday from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm. This occured at the request of a joint resolution made by congress on May 11th 1950 (64 Stat. 158)

This request is made for citizens with flag poles to do the same thing.

On MONDAY, you raise the flag to the peak, hold it there for a few moments, then lower it down to half mast. Before sunset, you raise it again back to the peak, hold it there for a few more moments...then ceremoniously lower it, and remove it. Never let the flag touch the ground.

I'm not a military post so I see no reason to fly an American flag
