My partner has a 1991 250 Virago and it keeps frying the rectifier/regulator. Has anyone any idea as to why?

The rectifier reg has been replaced 3 times and the local guy keeps saying thats all it is and no other parts need replacing so he put in a stronger/larger one. Now the wiring has fried as I suspected would happen. Can anyone suggest a resolution or a Motorbike mechanic/ Auto elect in the Ferntree Gully Area (Victoria Australia). Thanks

    i think you have to check the stator or whatever you may call it in your place/country... it is where the three wires that goes to the rectifier/regulator come from... it should read not more than 50 volts A/C, nor lower than 20 volts A/C on each wire...

    OR, you may also check for some loose connections in your wiring harness or shorted wires... good luck!

    You might check ebay for a good used wiring harness and a stock rectifier/regulator.You should have a fully charged battery and an over load fuse in the circuit.A dead battery (or shorted cell)that does not have a inline fuse ,will cause the wiring to fry.Make sure wires are properly insulated as to keep from shorting out.

    My first reaction was to suppose a bad catch diode on some piece of magnetic gadgetry (such as a starter motor), but if you've fried the wiring it is obviously more serious. Try a different dealer.

    Well if you never plan on jumping on the interstate the scooter is fine, but the scooter must be at least 175cc to ride on the interstate. A motorcycle is a better bet all around, they are actually easier to handle. a Virago is a good solid motorcycle, drivehaft no chain to bother with, low to the ground, smooth riding, and parts availability good.
