My first idea was to plant a seed, germinate mung beans in a jar by daily rinses and a screen lid, or grow a sweet potato plant or start an avocado seed. Since you are using PowerPoint, you have an opportunity to add some entertaining visuals and surprising facts graphically which keeps the interest going. I would suggest using some presentations to demonstrate the largest seed compared to the tiniest seed, and seeds versus tubers and other types of 'starts' that are not seeds, to get the thought processes opened up to how many ways there are to grow a baby plant, not just by seeds. Simple but eye opening differences.

Speech & language would mean to me reading outloud.

How about "poems for two voices" - each child reads a part.

There are books- but you can probably to a google search for some. Or take poems and divide them up.

    see: http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/poetry/tp/poems...

You can also do a simple reader's theater. My son is in Kindergarten, but in a first grade level reading group, and they had great fun doing a reader's theater activity.
