"DESIGNER BREED" fad - what's your say?

Moodle, Ruggle, Labradoodle, Goldendoodle, Cockapoo, Shihpoo, Bichonpoo, Puggle, Doodle, Yorkipoo, Chipoo, Chichi, Morkie, Maltepoo, Alaskan Husky, Jackroodle are just SOME of the MANY "DESIGNER BREEDS" that our shelters are FLOODED with. What's YOUR opinion on "DESIGNER BREEDS"? What's YOUR opinion on the IDIOTS that actually pay HUNDREDS of DOLLARS to IRRESPONSIBLE backyard breeders for the RUBBISH that they INTENTIONALLY breed?

Update:

Just to clear a few things up...

1. Poodle mixes DO shed!

2. Poodle mixes are NOT hypoallergenic!

3. CROSS/MIXED breeds are NOT healthier!

4. The AKC will NEVER recognize a MUTT/MIX/CROSS breed!

5. A responsible, ethical, reputable breeder will NEVER create a litter of pups that aren't purebred.

I've always dislike anything that has any note of designer in the name. Its just a fancy word for mixed breed dogs demanding a very high price tag. I see no purpose in these breeds at all. They are not hypoallergenic, they do not shed less and their temperment is questionable. Their health is in question also. For the price you pay for one of the designer breeds you can get a good quality pure bred dog. As long as people support and purchase these dogs then their going to be with us. The pounds and shelters are overflowing with them. It is a very sad situation indeed.

As long as these breeds sell their will be buyers. :(

Well, you're not exactly holding back your thoughts on the subject, but I do generally agree with you. While it's true that many of our modern dog breeds came from mixing older breeds, some of which no longer exist, the "designer dog" fad doesn't really seem to follow in tha tradition. For the most part, these dogs aren;t being bred with any mind to encouraging partciular traits or producing healthy offspring. I've heard of numerous cases where these designer dogs have pretty serious health problems because they end up with combined traits that don't make for a healthy dog. Certainly the people who looked at the names shelters were making up to increase interest in mixed breeds and said "Oh, I'll just breed a cocker spaniel and a poodle together and sell cockapoos and make lots of money" are largely to blame. But the consumers who buy "AKC registered" designer dogs because they haven't bothered to do a shred of research are the same people who pick up pet store puppies on a whim just because they're so cute. This is just a new trap for them to fall into. A fool and his money, as they say.

I guess I am one of these Idiots!! I paid three hundred dollars for my shihpoo and I wouldn't take a 1,000 dollars. for him. He is the best dog I have ever had.and the sweetest. and smart to top it off!!!

I research the designer breeds extensively before I purchased my pet

So what if it's a mutt, haven't you ever heard that mutts make great pets.

Mutts have been here longer then you.

The dog rescue and shelters are full of all kinds of pure breed dog's, In my area their are a lot of German shepherds, Pit bulls,Labs,Golden's and the list goes on.

I looked in shelter's when I decided, to get a shihpoo. Never saw ONE.

I would not agree with puppy mills and mass production of any, AKC. PUREBRED or MUTT.

Not all of these breeders are Irresponsible.

Do you think theirs no good dog unless he's purebred?

I don't speak for all of the mixed breeds but some of them might just be healthier and smarter.

Plus Some are damn cute. This is America you know?

I just think that its a way of creating impulse buying of pets, they have a cute name, so it must be a cute dog, then it grows up. Responsible, registered breeders are trying so hard to breed out health problems, then along come these 'designer' dogs, that the peddlers are trying to tout as 'healthier' than pure breeds. But the reality is, there is just as much chance of getting the health problems from both breeds in the cross, if not more, problems from both breeds are a possibility. Not to mention that to register these 'hybrids' with the ACHC, they have to have documentation to the purity of the original purebreeds, but they also have to prove that these dogs are more than just f1 hybrids, they have to pump out at least 3 generations of the hybrid with no dilution of other breeds, how many litters would that take, just to get 1 litter of f4, ACHC registered hybrids.

Its not just that, i agree, all pure breeds began as mutts in the first place, but they were bred for a purpose, to do a specific job. These 'new breeds' arent being bred for any other purpose than to sell a cutsey poo named dog. You cant try to tell me that a dog like a 'puggle' has any purpose, its not even being breed for a specific reason, such as the so called 'hypoallergenic' dogs.

I just think its a way to justify charging an extortionate price for basically a dog with no pedigree, no reliably predictable health and no reliably predictable conformation. The 'breeders' dont even have as much of an outlay for the price of breeding as a registered pure breed breeder does, yet they charge almost the same price. Its ridiculous.

If you think about it, all of the "recognized" breeds today were intentionally created. In the beginning, God created dog. Man created breeds. If somebody wants a dog that looks or acts a certain way, then they a right to try to breed for those characteristics, as long as they take responsibility for the litter and find good homes for all of the puppies.. I think it is a lack of responsibility that you're concerned about, not the kind of dog. But that is not limited to irresponsible "backyard" breeders. The shelters are also full of purebreds, and most of them are dumped by their owners, not their breeders. Your anger is misguided.

In response to your additional details, the AKC will recognize a "mixed" breed as a purebred once there has been enough generations to produce consistency and enough breeding stock registered with AKC's Foundation Stock Service (FSS--Look it up, because you obviously don't know what you're talking about!) to insure that the breed can survive. New breeds are being developed and recognized all the time.

    Pretty much what you said.

Though I won't say that some of the combinations don't come out looking pretty... it's just ridiculous, though... and they have so many health problems. =(
