Sure, a message could be sent out loud and clear. Recently, we had a day when Americans were encouraged not to purchase gas. But, several problems exist. Government can only do so much in the short term. The fact remains that there are underlying problems. One is supply and demand. The clamor for oil has gone up, but the supply has stayed relatively steady. Part of this is that other countries such as India and China are using more oil. We have not built a refinery in this country since the 1970's, so that when problems happen in the supply, we feel that throughout the system, and expecially in our pocketbook. Countries that have large amounts of oil are often in the most unstable of places--areas such as Venezuela, Nigeria, and the Middle East in general. People are worried about a potential conflict with Iran. Speculators who follow these trends help to raise the price of oil, prices that trickle down to consumers---lately it hasn't seemed like such a trickle!.

We have tried half-hearted attempts to wean ourselves away from oil, but this has not worked thus far in a large way even though we have coal reserves to last us for generations. We need to continue to make this resource burn in a much cleaner fashion. Attempts to produce more oil by drilling in areas such as Alaska and off the Florida coast bring are held back due to concerns over the environment.

The upshot is that there are things that can be done, but they will take time. No quick fixes. Change will require leadership, something that neither political party has shown much of on this all important issue.
