NO food or drink 12hrs before test. eating or drinking anything could effect the outcome of the test..thus you could be misdiagnosed!!

once you get to the test, they take your blood to get a base reading of your blood sugar from fasting, then they give you about 6-8oz. of glucose to drink (hold your nose, the crap is horrible!). the reason they don't want you to eat for 12 hrs before is because most ppl eat after about 8hrs of regular sleep. a normal person's glucose level can handle a 12 wait...a diabetic's glucose level cannot..thus it drops lower than it should. a lower glucose level than normal CAN determine diabeties, this is why they need to see how your body reacts to fasting...then they check to see what happens when you get a LARGE amount of glucose. a normal body can handle and deal w/the extra sugar, a diabetic cannot.

after that you can have small amounts of water. they then take your blood every hr for the next 3 hrs.

blood sugar levels, what is normal:

your fasting levels should be less that 95 mg/dl if higher they will flag that.

1hr test should be less than 180mg/dl..if higher again they flag that

2hr test should be less than 155 mg/dl and 3 hr test should be less than 140 mg/dl.

if they find any significant spikes in your blood sugar you will be diagnosed w/gestational diabetes and will be given the number for a diabetic dietitian that will help teach you about your blood sugar, how to monitor it, and how to eat better.

it's sounds scarier than it really is, the diet is not that hard to figure out, and taking your blood sugar becomes a habit.

it's very manageable, and you will see your dietitian regularly to monitor your progress. your doc will also monitor you determine if any medication should be given...

and btw bagels and cream cheese are LOADED w/carbs...which is exactly what sends your blood sugar through the roof...good lord! some ppl are completely clueless!

Ugh, I've had this test so many times... sorry that you have to have it, too.

Nothing by mouth except for water for 12 hours before your test. If it's at 8 AM, then nothing to eat and only water from 8 PM on. After midnight, nothing at all.

Take a bottle of water with you so you can have something to drink once they take the last blood draw! Take something like a banana, crackers, or a peanut-butter sandwich, too.

Also, ask if they can put the little IV shunt in your arm so that they can access your blood vessels through that each time, instead of having to poke you for blood every single time. Good luck!

I was told no food or water/liquids for 12 hours before the test. Also during the actual test I wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything. Towards the end I was getting really dizzy so I am glad that I had some crackers for after the test. Good luck-my results were that I did have GD but I only had to cut out the extra sugar...no more oreos for me then!

Yes you need to fast. Going first thing in the morning is the best idea that is what I did. You cannt even have anything to drink until after your first blood draw. After that they told me I could have a little water but thats it. It was a long time to go without eating but I guess you gotta do what they tell you. By the way it is so boring at the lab waiting and waiting so bring lots of stuff to do. Good Luck.

My doctor told me nothing to eat after midnight the night before. I had a snack around 10:30 pm and arrived for the test first thing the next morning (7:30 am). I passed. Good luck.

Bring a book. i had this annoying test too. Yeah, don't eat or drink anything tonight until the test. Thats it. They'll call you to take blood every hr. until the three hrs. is up. Real boring. bring something to do, make phone calls, etc. Good luck.

My doctor when I took mine for my last son said not to eat for 12 hours before the appointment and to avoid fluids that contained sugar or artificial sweeteners. I was so darn sick by the time the test was over because I was so hungry. I came up possitive for having gestational diabeties.

I was told not to eat anything in the morning before i had the glucose testing. I past it.

when I had to go in for this they said 12 hour fasting was not needed and to just not eat past like 6 pm and not to drink anything but water so your sugar level is normal
