She could have a corneal abrasion, alot of patients complain of tearing, the rocks etc just as your mother has but the only way to know for sure is to have some medicine put in her eye that will help reveal the abrasion and the Ophthalmologist can see it when he looks at your mother's eye through his microscope(Slit Lamp). If this is what she has he will prescribe some ointment and recommend that she patch the eye.

She could have dry eyes and every time she blinks, her eyelid is rubbing against the cornea which would also cause these symptoms but even more so if she has eroded away cells off of the surface of the cornea.Again she will need to see the Ophthalmologist for this medicine to be put in her eye so he can look at her eye through the Slit Lamp. He will prescribe either or both. . drops/ointment and possibly a patch.

In extreme cases of severly damaged corneas the Dr may request that she wear a Bandage Lens. . . kinda like a contact but it fits differently and keeps the lid from rubbing the cornea.

It is possible that your mother just has a good case of Pink Eye or Conjunctivitis for which the Ophthalmologist will prescribe some drops.

Until your mom can get to the Dr which should be ASAP if not soonershe can take pain relievers ,could keep her eye closed and keep a cool rag on it to ease the pain. . . . . but most definately she needs to be seen and it sounds serious enough that she DOES need to be there ASAP.

A damaged cornea is nothing to mess with and since your mother is a Diabetic, her vision is at a higher risk than the normal person without Diabetes. . . . get her there tomorrow! ! !

If her eyes were watery first, she may have dry eyes, she may have scratched her cornea if she was rubbing them. She needs to see an ophthalmologist soon. She may try over the counter lubricating drops to use in the meantime and an ointment at night, but she should be seen asap.

she could have seasonal allergies, or dry eyes i would definetly see an ophthalmologist to properly diagnose her, in the mean time she should use artificial tears not visine, as often as possible, if she has been rubbing her eyes alot she could have possibly scratched her cornea which can also cause the foreign body sensation she is having. she will need antibiotic drops if it is an abrasion. best advice see an ophthalmologist
