Why doesn't Congress give up their "golden parachute" health/retirement plan to help fix Social Security?

Any member of Congress who serves 5 years or more becomes vested in their health/retirement plan which covers them and their spouse for the rest of their lives. All their health coverage is at 100%. Their retirement is 100% of whatever they were making at the time they retired. For those members who serve only four years, there is an option to purchase the fifth year of service. If those people had to live under it like the rest of us, instead of off our backs, there wouldn't be a problem with Social Security.

    Not correct. From breakthechain.org:

The claim that congressmen do not pay into Social Security and, instead, draw outrageous pensions from the general fund is total fiction. Congressmen have paid into Social Security since 1983, when a change in public law dissolved the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS).

Likewise, they do not "continue to draw their same pay, until they die." Instead, they pay into the Federal Employees' Retirement System (FERS) and, upon retirement from service, draw a pension based on several factors, including years of service and age. Earlier versions used Bill Bradley and Hilary Clinton as examples (also fabricated). Break this Chain!

some changes yet we dont understand yet what he has in strategies or what Congress could arise with. He didnt say. i'm in desire of removing lots of the wasteful social secure practices reward different than retirement. i'm no longer in desire of elevating the contribution ceiling as a results of fact then SS will ought to pay greater reward whilst those human beings retire.

    I agree.

I'm sorry....I thought if you were SERVING the people....you shouldn't get MORE than what the least of them got.

Being a government official wasn't ment to be a career.

They should serve for the same pay as the lowest people that live here.

I really thought that was a means to keep our ""rich" a little grounded.

    Call me idolistic......

Find me one person today that came from a log cabin. Find me one that was actually on welfare.

Our social security isn't in shambles because of the baby boomers......our social security is in shambles because our government robbed the piggy bank and didn't pay it back.

Why would anyone give up a "golden parachute" clause in their health benefits or retirement program - especially to help the masses?
