You may want to try a place called Anise Cafe. It is a french Vietnamese fusion restaurant which has a unusual menu, eclectic atmosphere, quite romantic, and not expensive. The food is good and unusual with a very friendly wait staff. Must try the corn fritter appetizer. The place is very cute but in a very unexpected location in a strip mall behind see's candies, but don't let the location fool you, the restaurant is quiet nice. I agree with Leather, go to Santana Row. There's often some live band playing by the park. Lot's of nice restaurants to choose from depending on your taste. The atomosphere is also nice & romantic.

I just went to Taragon in Sunnyvale downtown. Their food is not bad, not too crowded. They also have live music but not sure about the schedule so you might want to check with them. The price ranges from $15 to $25 for main dish. Not sure if this fits your budget.

Santana row is too expensive, either go downtown sj or even the dive restraunts are great food, fun entertainment (try sherwood inn on almaden if you like karoeke)

BJ's is always a good choice, Cheesecake Factory, PF Changs, Buca de Bepo
