When someone is a compulsive liar, they tend to want to keep everything secret, and some people have the "power" to do it.

As far as I know, there hasn't been a presidential administration that didn't attempt to keep their visitor logs a secret.

The reason a president can get away with power grabs is that they are powerful to begin with. Factors here are many generations of wealth and prominence, the privileges and latitude usually afforded a president, and political connections established long ago, and built upon through the years. Congress also gets away with power grabs, occasionally biting into rights given to the president. The best example of that is when they attack the same kind of political appointments and dismissals that they would never attack when their own party is in power.

For every power grabbing rich Republican you have a power grabbing rich Democrat (Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, e.g.). And for most elections where the majority feels a Republican would do best in the White House, those same voters balance it out with a Democrat congress, or flip the whole script and make it a Democrat president and Republican congress.

There's nothing new going on in Washington, only new young people wondering what it's all about.
