How drastically would federal spending change if congress eliminated income tax withholding by employers...?

...and required a check every month from each individual tax payer?

Update:

I'm flabbbergasted by the two answers so far! Of you were sitting there every month writing a check and heard congress celebrate a 3.4 TRILLION dollar budget, tell me you wouldn't be driving to DC with a baseball bat!

It would drop. People would see the crap the government spends money on and rebel!

Federal Spending would have a lot more money dedicated to the penal system, since they'd be jailing a lot more tax cheats who didn't want to mail their tax payments in every month. Tax Fraud would become an epidemic.

From a pragmatic perspective, the gov't shouldn't care whether the money came from businesses or individuals, but generally a company's Accounts Payable Dept is a lot more reliable at sending a monthly check than the average American.

Do you have any idea how much higher debt would go up? It's already at an insane amount as it is... they would have to keep collection agencies, etc. I don't see it happening. Ever.
