Looking to invest in a new suit, but what is the trend these days and what is in? Also, what are the pros and cons of the two /three button and what other elements should I pay attention to? (such as the parting on the back - center parted or side parted)

Any good men's clothing store will have an expert on hand to avail you of the latest styles in your area. Try men's warehouse, they are good place to start.
In general, the more buttons means the more formal of the attire. Have you seen what other men in your line of work and in the same job you have are wearing?
In general the suit should fit well, make sure the pants leg has a nice break with the proper foot wear, and the parting on the back should not come open too much when you walk.
