How important is it to control hypertension?
I'm looking for statistics here, not just generalizations or guidelines. For one or more end results (death, hospitalization, MI, whatever seems appropriate), I would like to know the relative risk as a function of, say, systolic BP. [I have a few more questions that will help to shed some light on why I'm asking, but I think this one question stands alone pretty well.]

I am not a doctor but being a kidney transplant I can answer this question. It is very important and that it should taken care of the soon the better. Normal blood pressure runs 120/80. It can be even lower but that depends on how healthy the person is.
I have had hypertension for long period of my life thanks to stress and not knowing how to relax...when you have kidney disease the less your kidneys function the more likely you are to have hypertension (high blood pressure). I would say you you should go see one asap. That way if you, in fact do, have hypertension the doctor can write you a script for it. If it's high enough you may even have head aches that come from no where. This is sometimes a symptom. However, I never really had any head aches from it.
High stress jobs a good for giving people hypertension. If left untreated over time it does a lot damage to your body, such as harding of the artery's, kidney damage and even a stroke. I know because I had one and I was very lucky and it served as a warning to me that I needed to get in to see my doctor asap!
People of color tend to have a higher percentage than white people and I am not taking a dig at black people the facts are in pamphlets that you get at most hospitals and/or Kidney Foundation in your area. Not having your Hypertension under control can and does effect ever faucet of your life. And yes even your health. If your having a panic attack that makes you breath erratically and light headed and rampid blood pressure.
I have been a sufferer since 1983 when I turned 23. My Doctor told me to change my life style. I did and I also if needed have a bottle of Valiums for those rare but awe full anxiety situations that may present itself. I have been panic attack free now for many years. But I also know when to take a pill before the episode breaks out.
If your worried about addiction and many do. Use a sleeping tablet to suffice for Valiums. Many people cannot take all the types of non narcotics offered supposedly to do the same job.
Good luck
