Tangayikan cichlid tank ideas...?
I am planning on getting a 40-75 gallon tank for my Cichlids. I am just going to throw this out there, please tell me if this would work... and please don't give me any "one inch of fish per gallon" crap! The tank is going to be the longest tank I can find within the 40-75 gallon range.
15 miscellaneous Tanganyikan Shell Dwellers (Cichlid (under 2 inches))
3 Electric Yellow Cichlids (4 inches)
3 Yo-yo Loaches (4 inches)
2 Black Khuli Loaches (4 inches)
2 Dwarf Gouramis (2 inches)(male and female, maybe 2 females)
7 Schooling Barbs (2 inches or less... Ideas please?)
2 inches of sand and coral gravel combo
Live plants (Taiwan Moss, Riccia, Maybe 3 Swords)
20 shells for hiding
Maybe driftwood
I need help deciding what schooling fish to use if not Barbs, what rooted plants wouldn't get torn out, how many cichlids are reccomended without having them get torn up by each other.

I am just going to comment on what I know about....your choices ...hmmmmm
The shell dwellers would do better in a species tank. I have several and they are very territorial. All banding together till what ever is in their way is dead. No plant is safe with this cichlid.
The loaches and dwarf gouramis will be the fist to disapear.. sorry they have really no defence against the cichlids. They are a peaceful fish and should not be in a cichlid tank.
yo yo's will pull up all plants... they are natural diggers. All they do is dig. Deep rooted swords are you best bet. Or take other plants and put them in pots.
I have a 50 gallon with about 25 shell dwellers. 100 shells and a entire bottom full of sand. Oh, don't think they won't move the sand...lol They want the shells on the bottom of the tank and the sand will be stacked around the shells about 3 inches away and the height to match. You can not keep it neat. They will change it in a day. No plants survived!!

ok, ninety gal with an Oscar, thats sensible, regardless of the undeniable fact that it limits what else you may upload. i'd bypass with yet another large yet somewhat peacefull cichlid like a Severum or comparable, and a large Pleco or different catfish. in case you purchase the ciclids small and enable them to strengthen up jointly they are much less probable to combat. Get a huge pleco so it does not get flawed for foodstuff through fact the Oscar grows. The tank will look empty to commence with, yet as quickly as the fish all attain a foot long it is going to commence looking exceedingly small.. Dont hardship with vegetation, the large cichlids will merely destroy them. Get some large rocks, a pair of huge lumps of driftwood and a few gravel. Dont problem approximately the place you place the gravel, the fish will pass it approximately to verify themselves. Get a large 'hollow log' style ornament for the pleco. i'm installation a 80gal, in general for my large pleco, yet gets a large cichlid or 2 for it besides. Ian
