Do you think that American citizens should learn Spanish as a second language?
Do you think that because there are so many Mexicans moving here that in order to better get along every American citizen should learn Spanish as a second language? I have mixed feelings on the subject myself.

I don't think American citizens should...because people from Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Peru.. come here as an immigrant, they are the ones on a new country, they should learn how to communicate with people from this country...
If you move to France, you would learn to speak french so you can talk and understand people right??...or you would expect France to learn English??..no they wont because you are in their country, and you should learn to speak their language for respect...its enough that the country is giving you a chance to make it in life
I do think those people Should learn English...the same way the learn how to manage the money from here...unless its an old person..that would be a different story..
You can learn the Spanish for you...just in case, you go to a Spanish speaking country..that would be different..

Sorry to say the reason we are getting skilled jobs from other nations is because we have 11 different work visas for companies to obtain those individuals at a much reduced pay rate. Skill has nothing ot do with it and neither does language. Most schools require kids or at least colleges to have a certain amount of foreign language. There is no reason we don't have it in grade school here like other countries that require student s to learn sometimes 2 foreign languages so they are able to service the wealthier tourist that come to their country and they rely on the income...We are not far behind that sense we have helped other nations to take over our productivity in manufacturing, clothing, etc. I dont think any one wants to be ignorant, I think its a shame we do not get more down to real old fashioned learning and teaching sense it used to work and all the easy methods we have today, prove to be not cutting the grade. We have lost sight of the importance of education and focus too much on the electives instead. We are falling short because good education and secondary education is too costly for most. Some countries like people to not be educated, they can use them cheaper and they are trying to accomplish this here. Its too bad our government is looking more to help big business( that they get nice perks from) get richer, then help the future of this country. I guess too many just dont care. We are more concerned with taking charge overseas of others business interest, then to preserve this country and its people.

It would be great not only for a better understanding with the other language spoken people. But for a better understanding of themselves.
In USA not only Mexicans but there are a lot more of Spanish (Castellano) speaking people. But not only Spanish, but two or three different languages do not hurt, on the contrary, it make you more valuable in regard to jobs and general social skills. It widens your views on life in general. Don't forget that the world now is smaller and closer due to technology and globalization.

I think that everyone should have to learn a foreign language just to train the mind to work in a different way. And, in the U.S., Spanish seems to be a logical choice. However, I don't think anyone should be compelled to take Spanish if they'd rather take French, German, Russian, ASL, Japanese, etc.
Although I'd certainly think it necessary to learn English, I don't think immigrants should be forced to learn English if they can do without it--provided they don't expect special treatment, or expect me to speak Spanish, which I don't. (Je parle Français).

No. I think that Mexicans should learn a second language if they chose to live in a different country.

The Hispanic population is now the largest and fastest growing minority in the United States.
Although some fear that Spanish could eventually replace English in the U.S., the study of other multilingual situations suggests that Spanish is not a threat to English, because English remains the dominant medium of cultural, political, and economic life.

No, if you come to this country, you should learn the language. If I go to France, they aren't going to speak English to me (for the most part.) And I don't like how you used the term "moving in" when most of today's immigrants from Mexico are illegal. That's even more of a reason we shouldn't have to.

I think you should know the language that is most spoken in the country. If you go to another country, then you should learn that language. I'm moving to Denmark and I'll be learning danish; I don't expect everyone there to speak english to me.

absoulutely not.
However, i think that before they get there green card, they should be required to learn english.
In america, English is the language. I wouldnt go to france and expect everyone to know english.
