Hmm, that's a bit of a poser as, like you said yourself already, it's so open ended...

    Chorus + Operatic + Scary

Nothing in Beethoven's one and only opera fits the chorus+scary element, so I'll rule him out here.

Mozart's *much* better news, though. The one you're most likely to have come across is the Act 2 Finale to 'Don Giovanni'. Ingredients: full ensemble of soloists, an irate Stone Statue dropping by, a chorus of demons, and a descent into hell for the protagonist.

An alternative Mozart possibility, very much less familiar to many than Giovanni, and in some ways even more intimidating, is the Act 1 Finale to 'La Clemenza di Tito". Ingredients: a chorus of terrified Roman citizens, ensemble of imperial (and others) soloists, the whole of Rome's temples, give or take, in flames -- you get the picture. The terrifying element is that the whole fracas collapses into a stunned, extremely hushed murmur as everyone contemplates the ruined ashes of the city. A finale that, rather startlingly, ends in a whimper, not a bang.

    Perhaps suck 'em and see?

I would guess something by Carl Off too.

Not sure if it is "O fortuna", but it's likely something from his work "Carmina Burana". It's featured in countless movie TV commercials and others.

I've sung it in large choirs. Although, due to its theme, the one choir I'd like to sing it with, won't do it, since they are a heavily religious group, not part of a church, but founded and populated by a bunch of people who are really into music, but into religion too. Might even be a little hard to find a place to perform it, as the venues a large group (60 with an additional 40 - 60 orchestral players), find to play in, are frequently churches!

A very challenging piece to sing, but extremely fulfilling if you can make it through!

Try "The Prisoners Chorus" from the opera "Fidelio". This was Beethoven's only opera. Off hand I cannot think any music from Mozart that would considered scary sounding.

  • I vote for Heather's answer, it's the Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.

However it could also be Beethoven Symphony #9 ode to joy
