Tofu poisonous?
Can anyone clear up some unhealthy news about tofu, which I've heard from various sources? Is it due to the mass production method? I've seen the article in the following link, but just like to hear others opinions, and facts before I stop eating tofu.
(The Trouble with Tofu and the Brain) www.becomehealthynow.com/...
**** Perhaps my question should have addressed " Does the modern production method of Tofu caused any type of adverse effect on our health when consumed?" I have no doubt the "Old Fashion" way of Tofu making was absolutely great for your health. That is why I've been eating it for years. It's the modern mass production methods that is drawing my concern.

I would listen to "Mr. God" on this ..........
Soy is very difficult to process into edible food product. Without processing it is EXTREMELY toxic! It is now proven that so-called "soy protein" has nowhere near the food value or nutrition of animal based protein and indeed may actually be harmful.
The main use of soy is in the production of vegetable oils. (over 70% of vegetable oils are made from soy) The process produces HUGE quantities of soy waste products. The manufacturers of these waste products have been busily working for YEARS to convince people that they should eat it, so that they can sell it instead of having to throw it away. In fact if you check the frozen food section of the supermarket you will find that 90% of frozen products now contains soy waste in some form! It is very sneaky, it may be called "soy protein," "soy products", "vegetable protein", "hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) ", "structured protein fiber (SPF)," but its all just soy waste products.
Before starting off on a diet which includes this crap I would really check it out on the various web sites.
(And to the idiot who said he's been eating it for years and is still alive......... I smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day for 35 years and the day I quit, I too, was still alive. But I bet I'm going to live a little longer now...........)
All I'm saying is - check it out..........

I am a 50+ Japanese American. I have eaten tofu and soy beans all my life. Just remember that Japanese have eaten soy beans for over 1,000 years and they have the longest life expectency of any industrial nation in the world. If you are concerned then follow the common Japanese dietary practices. We do not eat soybeans on everything and we do not drink soy milk as regular practice, etc. Also, if you are concerned with brain development, note that Asians are at least 10% of the Ivy league incoming freshman student population while they are about 1% of the population. Get the picture! In California, Asians are 20% to 50% of the incoming class of University of California schools including Berkeley and UCLA.
I read "The trouble with tofu and the brain." Did you notice that it was written by South River Miso Co. Conway, MA. and the last part of the article was a pitch for their "safe" miso. Ever since the sixties, people have been making various claims based upon "scientific evidence". Do not always believe it. Read with a critical eye. Ask who is the author, what are their credentials?, If it cites other research review the footnotes and look up the article. Sometimes you will find that people twist the research to conclude what they want thinking that no one will actually read the footnote. Another article that has been cited in these answers has been criticized for that very reason. Just because it has footnotes does not make it fact. Be suspectious when commercial interest are at stake.

I recognize plenty of folks with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's and Thyroid disorders who not ever heard of a soybean. They weren't vegetarians. They had been/are meat eaters. Does this imply meat consuming explanations Parkinsons and Alzheimers and thyroid disorders? No. It manner we do not recognize the entire solutions to those disorders but. Some of it'll also be genetic. Scientists had been equipped to exhibit a few genetic hyperlinks to Parkinsons and to Alzheimers a minimum of. The tale is also moderately real, however you would do that with any meals and discover whatever quite dangerous approximately it. In usual it's continually great to stability out your vitamin and now not overeat someone object.I have visible claims that soy can aid cut back ldl cholesterol and aid sizzling flashes, so there may be a few well to be mentioned approximately it.

There is no conclusion on this issue. It's being debated on both sides very heavily (you can see this on Wikipedia). Here's just one article
http://www.foodrevolution.org/mothering.htm
It's brings up some good points and has an original article link that you can read...I think most of the good articles about the negatives are on that becomehealthynow website that you cited.
Here's some more about breast cancer

Basically as you can see both sides make great points but NOTHING has actually been proven. I'd say if you like the taste of it then continue eating it but if you're super worried about it then cut back.

Yeah, the more I read about "soy products" the less I want to put the crap into my body! And like my friend above pointed out this stuff is popping up in all processed, frozen and canned goods, sort of like genetically altered foods, whether we want it or not!
(And to "James T" below, yes the Japs tend to be healthier and live longer, its true, but with all the "stealth" soy additives being secretly crammed into our foods today in the US, the Japs are also only eating 20% of the soy products per capita that the average American is eating...... and it sure as Hell isn't making us any healthier or smarter, is it?)

I have eaten something made out of tofu alomost everyday for two years and I am not dead. All foods can be dangerous at times, just because of human error, for example spinich, ice-cream, eggs, penut butter etc.
You can't live in a bubble. Enjoy your food.
