What do you do when you know your mom has a mental problem & that she needs help?

I have depression & a severe anxiety disorder. Back in October my mother went hysterical on me because I would not let her control my life. I was 34 at the time. I ended up going to a Behavorial Health voluntarily because I had to get away from her. I have a live threatening illness and I couldn't take what she was doing to me. She was absolutely trying to destroy my marriage. I talked to my counselor and she told me that I could not have my mother committed that the only ones that could would be her parents, siblings or eldest child. I don't think this is fair to my oldest sister but I can't help her. Yesterday afternoon she went as far as making this comment: I will never go into a nursing home, I will take a pistol and blow my freaking brains out. I told her to shut up, that is bad enough telling her kids that but to say it in front of her 5 year old granddaugther. Does anyone know if I can help her if she starts talking about killing herself???? Please be serious.

Its tough to deal with such an emotionally devastating relationship with your mother. You can suggest she seek help, perhaps the whole family can be involved (an intervention). If she refuses and continues her behavior..the only thing you can do is take care of yourself and your own children. She has to take responsibility for herself. And you need to protect your own well being and that of your child/children. Go back to therapy to help you cope and learn healthy ways to deal with her and your own feelings

In most states, just threatening suicide will get the person into

a mental facility for at least a 3-day evaluation. I would like

to ask you if maybe your mom is in the pre-menopausal

or actual menopause state. This can knock many women

out into no-mans-land where they can no longer function.

It is a simple problem to treat with temporary hormones.

If she has been mentally stable all along and then came up

with these unusual bahaviors, I would strongly suspect

    hormone imbalance.

Usually calling the police and telling them that she is trying to kill herself or threatening to kill herself does the trick. Im not sure where you live but in TN,they cart them off to lakeside for that stuff.

Just have her go to counseling and you go with her go to family counseling.
