How do I clean my dust mop?

I have a dust mop, I think that's what it's called, to sweep the floor. It's long and wooly and I just glide it across the floor. So, how do I clean all the crap off the dust mop?

If you can remove the mop head off the frame you can throw it into the washer. Since it is made of wool you will want to use special washing to get it clean. If you wash in with your other cleaning rags you might get little "pills" (those little balls of knots) on the mop head. Plus washing it in hot water might make it shrink (as well as drying it out in the dryer on high heat); which will make it a pain to get it back on the mop. To reduce the risk of it shrinking lay it out flat, some where the air can circulate around it. On the other hand if you cannot remove it; use a vacuum hose to remove the dust/dirt off the mop head.

Edited: if you use the vacuum and there is still some dirt left on the mop, use a damp wet rag to gently wipe the rest off and then hang the mop to dry.

Wash them in soap and water. I use to bring the ones we used at church home and wash them in my washing machine on gentle cycle. Hang to dry to prevent shrinking. You can pull the damp mop heads over the frames of the mop handles and let them dry that way. If they are coated with the spray to pick up dust make sure you use a detergent that eliminates oil/grease such as Era. Don't use them until they are dry. You can hand wash them in a sink of warm water with dish detergent but they take a long time to dry as you cannot wring them as dry as a washer spins clothes dry. I would try one first and see which method works. If they are poorly constructed they could come apart. I worked for a church for years and we washed and reused the same dust mop heads there for the entire time I worked. You can call your cleaning supply supplier and ask about washing them but as I said we did it once a month for many years. Hope this helps.

If the mop part comes off the handle, which it usually does, you can wash it in a washing machine. If not, swish it around in a bucket of soapy water, rinse and let dry.

Wash in low, delicate cycle, or in your wash cycle of hand washables, on cold temp. Then hang outside to dry, It'll be like new and most of all clean! Keep up the good clean job!

I know a couple of ways to clean it-- You can take it out side and shake it really well, You can use an air compressor on it to blow the dirt off of it and then you can put it into the washer with your rugs. I wouldn't put it in with your regular clothes.

It should have a removable head on it that you can throw into the wash with your dirty rags. If it's the old-fashioned kind with strings to tie it onto the metal frame, or a slightly more recent one with velcro attatchments. Check it out.
