Since people look for what they want in things, how do you know you simply don't want your religion to be true

And thus stop pursuing what truth is because you assume you know it? In Christianity you assume its all in the Bible, in Islam the Koran, etc.

I mean, if you want something to be true, you have a vesting interest showing it to be true (because it's easier, more comfortable, less conflict, etc.). There is personal attachment, self-identity, and greed all vested in maintaining that truth (security, feel-good feelings, etc.). If instead you are actively dispassionate about what is true, in other words accepting something as true because of contently testing its validity, you have no self-interest in its verification and can reasonably believe it and know you aren't fooling yourself, or others aren't.

Thoughts? Comments?

Update:

@Fireball Doesn't that mean you have a personal interest in that "call" being for you, making you, out of 6 billion people in the world, special? You're statement shows nothing except that you think you are special, thus have a vested interest in your truth being true

A valid argument. Many people I've talked to insist that their faith is the "true" one because they "feel" its truth...in their hearts or whatever. The problem is that members of all religions have felt the exact same sense of certainty for their pet religion.

Mormons, Baptists, Muslims, Quakers, and so on all testify to the "truth" of their religion based entirely on emotionalism. There is no objective way to evalute the "truthfulness" of any particular faith.

ABSOUTLY CORRECT its a shame that people belong to a religion because it was their parents, I was raised like that, but at age 32 I studied the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses, and I finally qualified to become one (you have to meet certain qualifications to be a REAL Christian) I found that the Bible is accurate & true & the things taught by most religions have large descrepencies in them, I talk to them all the time, they go on EMOTION I choose to go by what the Scriptures say, when I was a Catholic I always went on my personal opinion but personal opinions mean NOTHING but its the heart condition of people, these are of the same type that killed Jesus, they don't wont the facts they will say I know what I believe isn't this the attitude people had when Jesus showed them all sorts of miricles?

I suspect that is why we choose the religoins that we do - and no matter what you were raised with, it IS a choice. I believe that the best thing any individual can do is to challenge his/her own beliefs by learning about other concepts, ideas, idealogies, theologies, and philosophies. A religion that can't stand up to a few questions isn't much of a religion in my opinion. I seem to have done this all my life (the reasons would be very long-winded), and my own view of God is a constantly-changing one. Ultimately, I have come to believe that it matters not at all how you come to God, so long as you are on YOUR trail and looking!

Most people want there religion to true, if it wasn't they would be wrong, and god forbid that should ever happen. I'm not saying they are wrong. I think all of it is part of growing soiritually. I think we should always keep looking and never settle for less, and its hard for the people who are so sure of themselves to do that. Theres no point in searching if you think you have the answer.

Philosophy says "To thine own self be true" Denial of Religion is not being true to Faith or self.

Faith is justifiable belief in God. That Faith can be denied but never proven False.
