What is the second number in my system properties after the CPU description?
Windows XP Pro on a Dell D600 with a Pentium M 1.6 processor.
In system properties the computer information shows:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) M
processor 1600MHz
599 MHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
I don't quite understand the 599 MHz. I'm assuming this is the actual CPU speed of the Pentium M.
The reason for the question is that I am having problems with the software bogging down and running sluggish. I checked another laptop in the department with the same specs and it shows 1.2 GHz. Why is mine showing 599? Could this be the problem? How do I fix it?
The helpdesk told me that I just had a slower CPU. I know this is incorrect, but don't know what to do.
Any ideas, please.

Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Power Options.
In Power Schemes, set it to Desktop.
In portable/laptop mode, the CPU is slowed down to reduce power drain. If set to Desktop, it will bring you back up to full speed, but it will reduce the battery life.

You could very well have a virus or you have have background processes running which shouldn't be. Open your task manager to determine what is running (ctrl+alt+delete). Click on the "CPU" until 99 or a high number is at the top. Note which processes run at the highest numbers (top 10) and then do a little research. You will also want to check the msconfig setting to see what runs at startup.

The first number, 1600 MHz is your CPU speed, which means you got 1.6 GHz CPU, 599MHz is your Frontside bus speed which is the speed on your motherboard.
