No, but the rate of flow is reduced. From April through October, during tourist season, the water flows at a rate of 100,000 cubic feet per second. Canadian and American governments made an agreement that the flow would stay at this rate throughout the tourist season. The Falls have an estimated 12 million visitors each year, and the agreement between the Ontario Hydro and the New York Power Authority allows the flow to remain at that rate while allowing them to draw a reduced amount of water so that it does not interfere with the amount of water going over the Falls.

While it is possible, with the diversion dams and tunnels that divert water into the turbines....it would likely flood out Chippawa if they did it. So no, they won't be shutting down the water, but there are plans to open up extra tunnels to turbines rarely in use, which will slow the flow over the Falls greatly. They only use 1/4 of the tunnels actually built, and usually during the night, as apposed to during the day when tourists are wanting to see the Falls. The US is needing more hydro than they are currently buying from us, so by diverting more water to the turbines, the OPG will be able to meet that demand. I just hope they charge the US a ridiculously high price for it. What choice do they have but to pay it?

  • Niagara falls is a river that flows over a drop in the river bean. It flows all of the time, year around.

Hey Pedro, don't listen to them. I am in charge of the falls in Niagara. And while all of these other folks are sleeping, I do turn the falls off. It is simply a waste of water to keep it running when there is no one to admire it. By conserving it, we get great thundering flows during the day when there are lots of tourists around. Makes it look impressive. ;)

it doesn't turn off...but they do restrict more of the flow (diverted to the power plants) at night...and even during the day it runs at 50% of full flow...
