What is the significance of wood pieces tied in bags and hidden / hung around a house?

I hope someone can help answer this odd question, I recently helped to clean a house after a group of Chinese men had been staying in a house, around the house on the back of doors, in cupboards, under beds, on brush handles and on curtain rails all round the house were small pieces of wood tied in cloth to make parcels I was hoping someone might know the significance of this.

Update:

the wood was a white wood and it had been quartered, it was hard to figure what wood it was if that helps at all.

I could probably answer this question better if I knew the type of wood; but I would wager that it was some type of protection charm to ward off 'evil spirits' and keep them safe. If I knew the specific wood I could look up the specific associations of them, but oh well! I hope that helps.

Were there any symbols on the wood, or Chinese characters? Was there any smell, such as sandalwood or other scent of maybe herbs?

Sounds like a "conjure bag" or some kind of mojo.

They were workers from a Chinese Chip Shop.

Mojo bags? Or if the wood was scented, maybe they were air fresheners.

Might be religious, or homeopathic, or just a way to get rid of bugs. lol I have no clue, but what an interesting find!
