Aces high/low...uh...huh?

OK, so is this just the game on my cell phone, or do aces change value in blackjack? Like, I put down one, and it's worth 11, and I put another on top of it, and it's worth 1.

Is that how it works in other card games? What does the value depend on?

Or is it just like that to confuse me on my cell phone game (Virgin Mobile...oh, can't remember the name. But it's like a cross between Free Cell and 21.)?

In blackjack Aces are valued as 11 unless that would create a total greater than 21. If that happens their value changes to 1. So if you had Ace-King, you have 21. If you have Ace-5, you have 16. If you have A-6-10, you have 17.

    Somewhat perversely, if you have Ace-Ace, you have 12. And if you have Ace-Ace-Six, you have 18 (11 + 1 + 6)

In many card games aces can be high or low. Typical poker games, where the best hand wins, treat Aces as high. However, in Lowball poker, where the worst hand wins, Aces are typically treated as low.

In a split pot game, where the jackpot is split between highest hand and lowest hand, Aces are commonly treated as high for the high hand and low for the low hand. A hand like A-2-3-4-5-A-5, is a great five card low hand (A-2-3-4-5, BTW straights don't count) and a good high hand (A-A-5-5-4, two pair Ace high)

Aces work differently in poker and blackjack because they are different types of games. In Blackjack you are adding your cards together to make a hand closest to 21. In this case aces have a value of 1 or 11. In your scenario where your first ace was 11 and the second only had a value of 1, it is because if they both had a value of 11 you would bust with 22. I'm not sure the game you're playing, but in blackjack a hand with 2 aces would have a value of 2 or 12, 1+1 or 11+1.

In Poker you are trying to make combinations of cards, not come up with a total value. Generally, in poker, aces are considered high cards. They can be used to complete the highest or the lowest possible straights, A-K-Q-J-10, highest, or A-1-2-3-4-5, lowest. There are variations on this also, like when you're playing a high-low split game or Pai Gow Poker. In Pai Gow A-1-2-3-4-5 is the second highest straight because aces are always high cards in that game.

In blackjack aces are worth either 1 or 11 depending what you cards add up to For example, if you have 2 aces and a 4 you total is 16, if you only have 1 ace and a 4 you total is 15. It will it can change depending what you total is so you don't bust.
