Java updates?

hiya.i've just bought a new laptop & when i open up my homepage a balloon pops up saying Java updates available.

I've just got my computer & haven't downloaded any Java software.What are these Java updates & are they safe to download?

    Java is provided by Sun Systems as a Free Enhancement to IE, FireFox and various other interfaces. Updates and patches are available for FREE from Sun

    Java is needed for some games and stuff. It's safe to update.

    Java updates are important for security reasons (bit like windows updates)The latest version is 1.6.0.1 Go into Control Panel and look for Java,click update at the top,then press update now.Your firewall may tell you that jucheck.exe is trying to access the internet,allow.It is advisable to remove old versions from add and remove programs.

    Its windows update (the baloon) saying that theres an update to your current java. They are safe to download, they are normally used for online games and chat sites.
