Are most all (especially a '98 Ford Explorer XLT) voltage regulators built in the altenators?

    Yes. In fact, to test yours, just look at the back of the alternator. There are two screws on the back of the regulator, one is covered, the other says ground here to test. With the engine running, ground the screw with a screwdriver to the alternator case, and it should go to full output. This by-passes the regulator to see if the alternator is good.

    Yes since the mid 70's virtually all cars had internal voltage regulators.
