what would cause black soot to come out of my exhaust on my vectra sri 2.0 16v?

Update:

also forgot to mention it chocks now and again when in 1st gear but as i put my foot down it clears.

    Black smoke is usually a sign that your engine is running too rich. It could be a number of things, but it's something you should really get checked out as it could lead to other more expensive problems, like the catalytic converter failing.

    Burning oil is white-blue smoke, not black.

    Worn piston ring let oil seep into the exhaust wear it is then burned leaving a black soot in the tail pike. Time for an engine overhaul! Good luck
