Have you ever been turned down at a dentist?

yu show up and they take your BP and tell you its is to high? it was 150/89, is that an excuse to thin the appt schedule??mine is usually 140/85 but stress makes it higher as a trip to the dentist is stressful?

Update:

it was for 2 upper molars right side

I work for an oral surgery office and we do at times have to reschedule our patients if their BP is too high. If your BP is high to start with and gets higher b/c of stress of going to the dentist, your BP will go EVEN higher during the procedure you are about to go through and may cause a stroke or heart attack. Your doctor is only looking out for you and your health. You may want to see your PMD (primary medical doctor) to get your BP regulated before going through any more dental treatment.

Yes. It's actually really great to have a dental team that cares that much about your overall health (versus treating a patient who could have complications just for the money)!

The stress you experience at the dental office (making your blood pressure go up!) is the same thing that happens in your body EVERY time you're stressed. (Running late, juggling finances, having arguments, etc). So the 150/89 is where your blood pressure MOST likely is several times a week.

Hopefully they recommended seeing your doctor to evaluate you for medication to help lower your blood pressure.

The possible reasons for rescheduling are-

the local anesthetics most commonly used contains an ingredient that raises your blood pressure (if you already have high blood pressure and they injection this into you- you could have a stroke)

the stress of experiencing pain in your body (even if it's just for a "cleaning" and the hygienist slips and pokes your gums) also releases chemicals in your body that can raise your blood pressure to an even higher (more dangerous) level. They can't predict how high your blood pressure will "spike" and again, you could have a stroke...

Be glad you have a dentist that cares about you (not your wallet) and see your regular doctor soon for a follow up on that blood pressure :)

Wow, that sounds pretty strange. Was it just for a routine cleaning, or a more complicated procedure?
