Is it still dangerous to take showers during thunderstorms?

My mom always told me it was and now that I'm an adult, I still think I'll somehow get electrocuted or something. Why is that something she told me not to do? Is it outdated and weird? Anyone else stay away from the shower if there is lightning?

Update:

Uh oh. I have one of those old porcelain dipped claw foot metal tubs...

Yes, water is still an excellent conductor for electricity, especially if you have the old porcelain-over-metal type of bathtub. If it's a fiberglass tub the risk is not great at all.

I don't think so...there was one man who was taking a shower, his bathtub got picked up in a tornado, and he was found later---still in the bathtub and alive!

My mom used to tell me the same thing though...I think it had to do with the fact that we took showers in the basement, and the current could travel through the concrete.

My grandma was the same way. My mom really didn't say much about it but then again she never took a shower or anything when it was storming.... but I think its ok to. I've done it before.
