Guitar question / opinion?
I've been looking at buying a new guitar. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money ($500 max) and I definently do not want a les paul, SG, or a strat (everybody has them)
What's a guitar that is well built, from a reputible company, and kicks ***?

I'd go to guitar center(or whatever your local music supermarket's named) with a friend who plays, and test drive some guitars. Do an A/B comparison- play the same music on the same amp with each guitar and see what you think, and get some input from your friend. A few hints- once you have your mind made up, go into the store on the last day of the month- the sales crew is looking to lock up their commissions for the month, and if you can point out a small ding or scratch in a floor model, that can be good for a 10%, maybe even 20% discount off the tag. Also, hold out for a free setup before you start talking discount-any decent store should include it with the price, and they should offer either a 14-day or 30-day period where you can bring the guitar back for adjustments to the action or intonation. If they don't, find a store that will. I'm saying this-and not making specific recommendations- because in your price range, there are a lot of options, depending upon what music you play, your playing style, and what you use for an amp. remember-if it doesn't feel good in your hands and it doesn't sound good to your ears, it probably won't be down the road.
Good Luck!
PS- I've edited this- I do think Godin electrics are worth checking out- it's the same company that makes Seagull and Art &Lutherie acoustics. They're made in Canada and assembled in New Hampshire- www.godinguitars.com I do like that Freeway Classic...)
