Jan Svankmajer and Eva Svankmajerova?

These are the names of a czech surealist and his wife. Is there significance to the "ova" on the end of Eva's name?

yes,...in Czech last names ending '-ova' indicates it's a female name..

in this particular case it means 'Škvankmajerová' is a wife (or sister/daughter) of Mr. Švankmajer...

however, in Czech that's not the only ending for a female name...

    other examples could be..

    lánský (male)...lánská (female)

    novotný (male)...novotná (female)

The "ova" at the end of Eva´s last name means that she is the wife of Jan Svankmajer, so her last name is Svankmajerova. When you hear a name ending with "ova" you now that it is a name of a woman.( I mean when speaking of eastern European names.) The same thing goes for the Russian language too, and I´m sure for other languages related to Czech and Russian.

In some languages names have genders. "Ova" indicates female name.
