San Francisco was the first city in America to have universal healthcare. Massachusetts has implemented a quasi-universal health care system by mandating that residents purchase health insurance by July 1, 2007, which, in truth, is far from the true basis and intention of universal healthcare. Maine, Pennsylvania, and Vermont also are attempting universal systems. While desperately needed, such a system will never, ever completely work in this country because it smacks way too much of socialized government, which is only two steps away from the devil's doorstep itself as far as virtually all conservatives and some easily swayed liberals want to believe.
