headache cures without painkillers?

Lately I've been having frequent headaches, not unbearable but very irritating. Since I have ulcerative colitis, my doctor doesn't want me taking otc pain meds (they can cause intestinal irritation and I don't need any more of that). Is there anything I can do to make the headaches go away, so I can get on with my day? Something I could do while I'm at work or out of the house would be best, but anything that works would be great. :-)

Update:

It's not eyestrain, I just got my new glasses six months ago. :-)

The most likely cause is the drug I take to treat my ulcerative colitis, headaches are on the list of side effects. (and no, there is not another drug I could take and the headaches do not outweigh the benefits of taking it)

I find when I have a headache, if I rub it, the space in between my first finger and thumb are sore... I massage that area until it isnt sore any more, and then my headache is alot better or gone. I think perhaps its a pressure point or something.

I use acupressure on the trigger points just below my neck between the shoulder blades. To find it, press firmly with the hand over several points in the general area. If you find a trigger point, it will be very noticeably painful. Press on that area for 30-45 seconds then let up gradually. Do both sides on the neck. I also use acupressure on the temples; hold for 30 seconds and release gradually. Both techniques can help with tension headaches.

Check your diet. If you have MSG, cheddar cheese, nitrates, nitrites, sulfites or raw onions, they can cause food-related or migraine headaches. (read all the fine print on the package!)

Keep a diary of what you eat, when you have a headache, how long the headache lasts, where the headache is on the skull and anything different in the 24 hours prior to the headache. You might find a pattern.

Source(s): I had a headache for more than 20 years; it varied from mild to migraine, but never disappeared. I saw doctor after doctor and just heard: It's all in your head. Yeah, duh! Six years ago, I started going to a headache clinic in Chicago. With food/medication changes, the headaches are rare indeed. That also included a weeks stay at a hospital with a floor for headache patients only. I found I had migraines, food induced headaches, cervical genic headaches, and tension headaches. But it was worth it!

Get a cold pack and keep it in the freezer. Place it on the area that hurts the most, for three minutes. Then remove the cold and let the area warm up. Then repeat for another three minutes. keep doing this four or five times. A bag of frozen corn or peas will also work. Take two thick slices of raw ginger and heat them in the microwave - don't get them burning hot! Place one slice on each temple. Try a tea called Tension Tamer, made by Celestial Seasonings. Use a neck roll or a rolled up towel under the neck while sleeping. Do not lay down to read or watch TV. Massage your feet! Really. And do see a doctor to get it checked out. Good luck!

Allot of headaches are due to stress which then create what they call a knot in the muscle that runs in line with your shoulder blade. This why you see people rubbing there back up against the wall, where the two walls meet at a point, as they are using this point where the walls meet to press in near the shoulder blade to get the knot that has formed out. Get rid of the knot and you get rid of the headache. Another way of course is having a massage, a deep tissue one. If the headache does stem from your shoulders, it should also be sore when you press with your fingers where your shoulder and arm meet. Cheers and good luck

I noticed that your avatar wears glasses, so I wonder if you do too? Headaches can sometimes be a symptom of eyestrain and a prescription change is needed, or your glasses may fit a little too snug. I have also had headaches because of a hairband being just a little too tight. If you can not find a reason for the headaches you should consult your physician.

We have treated 15 - 20 yrs cases.

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

    Acidity, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation;

Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Avoid late sleeping if possible;spicy, sour, stale bakery foods and alcohole.

Sweet foods, sweet fruits, milk, rice and good sleep will help you.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

I get migraines often and the best thing I use for them is Gatorade/Powerade/etc. (I have a friend who does this as well) I feel better faster than I do when I take ibuprofen. My doctor said it was related to an electrolyte imbalance and that I should try to stay hydrated. Hope this will help!

If you do not want to take any more drugs, the best thing is do some meditation. It can even be done in your office. Also try to get good sleep.
