right click on the C drive icon
select properties from the menu
Properties window opens
Click on Tools Tab
Under Error Checking
Click on the button named Check now
A CheckDisk Local Disk dialog box opens
Check the options in there
-Automatically fix system errors
-Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
and click on start botton
You will receive a message that the check disk will continue after the computer restarts.
Restart the computer to begin checkdisk, it will run checkdisk and after its completion you should be able to run defragmentation

windows needs a certain amount of 'empty' space (10%/???) to defrag. it's a bit like cleaning an entire house: you need an empty room to put the furniture in while you scrub the walls and floors and other small junk gets put into their own little boxes.
if you're totally stuck, try migrating files to cd/xternal hd/ thumb drive/etc.; get rid of outdated files.
if you haven't done so, go to 'my computer'>'c' drive>properties: here the first page has 2 boxes at the bottom "compress.....' and 'index......' check both & ok these (you may have to wait a LONG time for the operation to finish (3-5 hours for very large drives) but this should loosen up some free space and then allow the defrag. op.

sounds like your computer is telling you to check for fragmentation on your primary drive. by running the chdsk /f it will run a check disk of the hard drive for fragmentation. this opperation will run below the operating system allowing you to work on a bootable drive. this will allow your computer to schedule a defragmentation prior to complete boot-up.
happy computing!

that's "run Check Disk"!!!
your hard drive, is TOO FULL... to DEFRAGMENT... a hard drive... NEEDS SPACE... to "move stuff around" during the defragmenting...
so... instead... run a Decompression program... you'll find it...
under "Tools"...
and, compress programs... that you DON'T USE...
that will FREE UP enough space... to DEFRAGMENT... your hard drive...
then... BACK UP and DELETE... some of "the stuff" on your hard drive... and, attach a LARGER external drive!!!
"thumb drives" are good... for "back up" too... and, they're always ON SALE or CHEAP!!!
good luck!!!

You'll need to actually run Check Disk - go to your "My Computer", right-click your "C" drive, and choose "Tools". Then do "Scan Disk". You'll have to reboot for it to work, most likely.

You might download and use CCcleaner (google it), and then try again to defrag your hard drive.
