It's too bad Michael G doesn't allow email. I would love to straighten him out. Hey Michael.... type twos often make too much insulin... hello!!! I'll bet your little mind thinks sugar causes diabetes too. That would also be incorrect. Open up your email so I can educate you.... you need it badly.

From what you are saying, you don't want to take insulin. This would seem to indicate that you are type two. The following information is for fellow type twos.

First of all... 41 is not old. I'm 55 and still not old.... yet. I've been a type 2 for around 4 years. Hard to say exactly, because it came on slow. Since becoming diabetic, I went through the denial phase and things started going to hell in a handbasket. I decided that I didn't want to die like my type 2 mother did. So, I embarked on a research expedition and learned that type 2s can control their blood sugar very well with some diligent application of the basics. Diet, exercise, weight management, and a few supplements. I've outlined these on my diabetes info webpage which I put together to share with other type twos. You're welcome to view it here:

    I'm 59 with type 2, diagnosed a few years ago. My A1C runs about 6.5 to 6.7.

I eat 5 times a day, 3 meals. 45 - 50 grams of carbohydrates. 2 snacks in the 10 - 15 gram range. Stay away from starchy vegetables like potatoes. Salads are great but watch the sugar in the dressings. protein is fine but you can't live on it. It will damage the kidneys.

Diabetes is a bit like AIDS. No one really dies from either. With AIDS the immune system can't fight an infection so the infection kills you. With diabetes the high glucose causes all sorts of organ problems. Normally we die of kidney, liver or heart failure or in some cases a stroke.

I take Glipizide as well as the diet. I have the nerve damage, neuropathy, from the knees down on both legs and in both hands with the left being the worst of the lot. I tell you that so you understand exercise is nearly impossible. I do a lot of puttering around the house and yard but at my age and condition employment is not very likely.

Just go with the diet, read all the food labels. Look at Total Carbohydrates and serving size. IMO it is the only way to control this stuff at all.

One more thing; testing. Test on a routine, I do so before breakfast and supper. You need to either test before meals or 2 hours after. 120 or less before meals and 180 or less 2 hours after. The 2 hours after is when the glucose is supposed to peak out. Maintain the routine for weeks or months then change it completely. Changing the testing time will give you a feel for all times of the day and night. I am about ready to change from my current schedule. I think I will go to testing after lunch and at bed time.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions I might be able to help with. I accept email at my profile.

This is a long row to hoe for you my friend, but there are ways to manage.

Do not jump into taking insulin if you can avoid it.

You do need to control your sugar intake and may even be able to correct the problem by losing weight and exersizing.

Read the labels on the foods you buy. Dextrose, Fructose, Sucrose, and all other words that sound like that are sugars. If they are anywhere near the top of the list of ingredients avoid that product.

Stick to home cooked meals if at all possible.

Meat, eggs and vegetables are the way to go for the most part. Keep servings of potatoes, peas and corn small. Keep servings of fruits small. (These are all high in sugars) Avoid breads, pastas, rices and noodles as much as possible. (once in a while is ok). Mild exersize is better than none.

In other words have the steak and asparagus instead of the chinese food, eat the bacon and tomatoe but skip the toast, have a slice of cheese instead of ice cream..........eat dill pickles or sauted mushrooms for a snack instead of cookies or crackers.

There are also pills that can be taken to help lower sugar absorption.

Boston U has done studies into diabetes, health risks etc. Try writing them for some info.

    Good luck to you.

Most remedies are not effective but has your physician suggest one of the oral drugs? These are possible answers to some patients. However, there are two remedies that I know of that have worked for some people. As a physician, I can not advise them but as an individual, you can try them. One is a tea made of boiled corn silk and used four or more times a day. The second (which I personally believe to be very effective) is a Vietnamese fruit called "Cai Coc"...slightly larger than a chicken egg, green skin and a strange thorny seed...the taste is just a bit sour...like a plum. They import this into Canada and perhaps other areas where there are Vietnamese communities. It is not expensive. I like the taste (though I haven't diabetes). There are other herbal remedies including plants such as parsley. Check the various websites. But as a physician, I strongly suggest using standardized drugs as insulin or orinase or the other products, we can control the dosages, but with herbal remedies, the dosages vary too much to offer a stable regime. Diabetes is an insidious disease and affects circulation, vision etc...Don't risk your life, loss of vision or amputations by trying to find an easy answer. Medicine is improving daily and soon we will have answers. 50 years ago, patients had little choice and the control of the disease was difficult, but today, it is much improved.

As a 41 year old diabetic myself I would suggest working with your doctor. Diabetes is not something you want to go uncontrolled. Also visiting with Certified Diabetes Educator is one of the most valuable things you can do as that it will give you a solid foundation to work with. If you are a type 2 diabetic you definitely have lots options in regards to medicines as that there are many oral medications that are available that help your body control your blood sugar levels.

When people say to cut out sugar, they mean even the complex ones. A piece of bread will raise your sugar as much as a cookie. So, cut back on bread, pasta, complex carbs. Boost the veggies, maintain protein, and EXCERCISE. Diabetes will hit all parts of your body. If you find that you cannot control your blood sugar with diet and excercise alone, there are some oral medications that you can take. If that doesn't work, then you will need the insulin. Long time high sugar can lead to blindness, neuropathy, kidney failure, amputations, etc.

Source(s): My mom has blindness, neuropathy, kidney failure (she's now on her second transplant), and amputations from diabetes.

    Ketogenic diet

If you will stick to it, it will work.

My blood sugar always ran at 370 or so. I weighed 300 lbs. I started the atkin's thing, but modified it to meet my needs. It was amazing. I especially loved it because the food was not restricted. I could eat all I wanted, but I just couldn't eat anything with sugar. I have eaten a high fat diet for 5 years. I lost 150lbs and my blood sugar is usually under 100 now with no meds. Heavy whipping cream was and is my staple food to keep the weight off. Whip it, add splenda and coaco powder. It's great. I love it in coffee too. Boiled eggs, especially the yolks soaked in real butter or mayo if you like it with salt and pepper are good. Macadamia nuts whole or blended into a nut butter are good. Use the nut butter on top of frozen cream (ice cream) or mix it with sugarfree maple syrup and dip apple slices in it. Crustless cheesecake made with real heavy whipping cream and splenda is great. Of course all pork that has not been cured with sugar and all meat. I also eat a lot of black olives.

The main thing is just eat foods that do not convert into blood sugar easily. No root veggies, no fruits except berries, very, very few grains and only lower carb grains, no sugar period. Think high fat no sugar. Your blood sugar will plunge if you just stick to it. My HDL (good cholesterol) went up to 41 from 32 within a few months. My triglycerides had been high, but dropped to 44. My LDL runs around 80 which is good. It had come down from 160.

I know there will be medical "professionals" who balk at this, but it really does work. Your body does not convert fat into blood sugar. Protein does convert but at a lower rate than any carbohydrate does. A ketogenic diet has saved my life. It goes against all the "medical advice" on fat of the last 25 years, but the proof is in the pudding. And it does work. Research it.
