Does anyone know anything about disability benefits for a child?

I have parkinsons' Disease so have not been able to work since 2003. My disease is progressing so trying to work is out of the question. I've tried doing some marketing and didn't do anything but loose money. I have had custody of my grandchild since 2001 and do not receive any financial aid from her parents except on rare occassions. They get her about every other weekend and both of them work. I did not ask for any aid when I gained custody as I knew I couldn't get blood out of a turnip and they willingly gave me custody because they couldn't get along and would have brawls - long story - Her natural grandfather does not give any aid either nor offers too. He can see her anytime but seldom ask and it would be war to get anything out of him. When I first applied for disability I was told that my now husband and I would have to adopt her in order to get any help. He does get a retirement and works sometimes out of a painters local. Can anyone give me any info?

Update:

I do have legal custody of her and I don't discuss money issues with her unless she ask for something we can't afford. Her stepgrandfather has done more for her than either her parents or her natural grandfather. If she were disabled then we could get help and BTW, I don't appreciate the answer about beating her up. That whoever you are was a stupid answer and you should be ashamed for suggesting such a thing. If you don't know the answer then don't answer - I am looking for serious mature adults that know how to answer a question , not some silly things he/ she know it all.

I would think you should be getting disability help regardless of whether you have dependents. Have you applied for SSI? Medicaid? If any benefits are contingent on your dependents, you shouldn't need to adopt them. If you list them as dependents on your taxes, that should be enough. Don't give up and take no for an answer, keep trying. Don't automatically believe what the bureaucrats tell you.

P.S. you probably can't get benefits for disability for the child, since you're the disabled one - but you might get benefits based on having a low income and needing to support the child.

I would call child services. It seems to me that every other grandparent who gains legal custody of a child is paid for the foster care they give so why shouldn't you? If you aren't the "legal" guardian then you are not entitled to anything unfortunately and you should pursue gaining legal custody. Have you discussed the lack of funds to care for their child with the kid's parents? Whatever you do -DO NOT DISCUSS MONEY WITH THE CHILD. Keep adults issues for adults and don't worry the kid. All you'll do is make him/her feel unwanted by their parents, you, and everyone else. DON'T DO IT.
