Are Basset Hounds good dogs?

I'm interested in getting a Basset Hound. I've heard they are calm and good with kids. I've also heard that they are hard to potty train. What experience have you had? What other good/bad qualities do they have?

basset hounds are great dogs my friend has 4 and they are so cute looking with there droopy eyes long body's and floppy ears

they love attention,my friends bassets love to be stroked and they are very good dogs to train, they are not the fastest dogs in the world out walking, but they are quite unusual in the UK and my friend is always being stopped and asked questions about her basset hounds.

they have a great life span as well ranging from 12 up to 18,the only down side to a basset hound is they are prone to eye problems due to there droopy eyes but they do make great pets

basset hounds can be stubborn sometimes and have a mind of there own but my friend had no problem toilet training them ,each dog is different to toilet train and there is no particular dog that is easier to toilet train than another.

my friend has 11 children and the bassets are great around them the kids play with them play ball walk them and the bassets follow the kids around more than my friend.

they are loving dogs and if you have the time get one you wont regret it

Bassets are a great family pet and no harder to train then any other breed. You and your children will have a great time raising and loving a Basset. The only difference is when your puppy eats you may have to hold or use a scrunchy to hold his ears up . lol

They want attention from people all the time! This is, of course, both a good and a bad quality. (-: Make sure you have a lot of time to devote to a bassett, or your dog will be very frustrated and very noisy. They also need to be kept indoors in superhot weather, and are prone to spinal problems because their backs are so long.

all i know is they are VERY good for people who are out a lot and busy. they're kind slow to catching on that their owner is gone... if you leave the house they won't know you left until you've walked back in the door... unlike austrailian shepards who are tearing the door down as soon as you close it.

they are real calm and gentle. good relaxed dogs. but i've heard they tend to wander away so keep an eye one em.

bassets are awesome! i've had three in my lifetime. (i'm 22) they're loyal, great companions, and good for kids. the only problem is if you have a lot of stairs in your house, it's hard on their backs. otherwise, they're great dogs.
