Do you guys have any gardening/yard etiquette you follow? For example?

When do you think it is ok to mow your lawn or use power tools? Last night my neighbor was mowing at 9:30pm. And the day before she was cutting hedges at 6am!

First check with your town to see if there is an ordinance about noise before or after certain times. Then whether there is or not you could mention that it is disturbing to you when she operates machinery at those times. If she gives you grief - then I hope you have an ordinance. She's either just not thinking or is inconsiderate and needs a wake up call.

I never mow before 8 AM weekdays nor 10 AM weekends. And I never mow in the dark even though a lot of lawn tractors have headlamps.

I hope your neighbor is reasonable and gives you some peace.

We actually have a noise ordinance where we live. And they enforce it if you call the police. You cannot use power tools, blowers or mowers, construction equiptment, before 7 AM and after 6 PM on weedays and 8 AM and 8 PM weekends. The first time you get a verbal warning and the second time you get a ticket and pay a fine.

But, everywhere I've ever lived the neighbors all kind of adhered to an unwritten code which your neighbor would be violating with her rude behavior.

Does this neighbor work during the day? Some people who work for a living at businesses like UPS and FedEx, (and other long hourly jobs) have ungodly 10 - 12 hour shifts, starting at 7:30 am sometimes.

The hours of 6 am and 9PM may be the only hours they can do yardwork around their work schedule.

Taking in consideration it might get extrememly hot where you are too.. this gardener may be avoiding the heat.

Best thing is, go talk to your neighbor and COMMUNICATE with her that it is interrupting your sleeping habbits.. of sleeping from 9PM to 7 am.

Well the old 8 to 10 rule should be a good rule of thumb. No noise before 8 am and none after 10pm.

However, you do not know her situation and it maybe the only time she has, so you have to consider whether it is better to have a neighbor with a nice looking lawn that makes some noise or a neighbor that is quiet with an overgrown lawn.

garden tools 8:00 am to 8:30pm

earlier if doing a massive project (7:30am) but never later 8:30 pm. I figure most people should be understanding that some all day projects are best started in the cool morning (plus, most people are up for work by then).

In California youre not supposed to do any work (yard, construction, automotive) before 7 am or after 8 pm. Outside of city limits there are really no regulations. Just respect.

That's a rude neighbor. Check with your local ordinance or HOA rules (if you live in one). There might be something specific on that.

Too early and too late in my personal opinion.
