I would say go through and manually delete> But be careful do not go in the Windows Folder or the Program Files. If you want to delete program delete them from the Add/Remove Programs. If you dont have the CD it makes it really hard to start from scratch. If this is a Dell, or HP call them or go online and request a OS CD. They usually ship these for free.

i think system restore is not the exact solution to your problem, if you really don't want to format your PC, then why not just do a maintenance, uninstall those unnecessary programs, delete unnecessary files, scan for viruses and spyware, do a disk clean-up, defrag, etc......
