Do betas need rocks in their bowls?
My sister gave me her beta fish and she's always had rocks in the bottom of the bowl, but the ones she gave me are starting to smell funny and I'm not inclined to buy more. Do the rocks serve some special purpose or can I just leave them out of her next tank change?

Bettas don't need rocks in their tank. Most of the time it's just for decoration. Gravel (tiny rocks) can be used to cycle your tank, that is, cultivate good bacteria that will help break down the waste in your water, forming what is called a biological filter (you can read a lot more about this elsewhere on the internet). HOWEVER, this is highly discouraged for bowls. Biological filters should only be used in tanks from around 5 gallons and up.
If you don't want rocks or gravel in your tank it's highly acceptable to just take them out. Gravel will start smelling bad after awhile because it's very difficult to clean without the use of a special gravel vacuum. You can leave the tank bare-bottom, or you can use different kinds of substrate like glass beads or marbles, which are much easier to clean.

Most people use rocks in their bowls because it helps decompose the betta's wastes. I'm not quite sure how- I just read it on the back of a package of rocks. It also makes the tank look uniform and pretty. And are you sure its the rocks that stink? Does your betta tank have a filter? If not, the water is (obviously) not constantly moving, therefore small things will make it go stagnant. For example, some of the betta's food is floating down to the bottom of the tank and is rotting- which makes it smell really bad, rocks or no rocks.

Betta's don't need gravel in the bottom of the tank. However if you keep plants the gravel is need to act as a rooting medium. The gravel also helps with hold bacteria that is needed in all aquariums.

Betas do good in almost any condition, with or without rocks. A smaller container needs to be without, but if you are putting it in an aquarium with a filter and all, rocks are fine!

They don't serve any special purpose, and they even hinder in the parent betta doing it's job. Just chuck it out back next time you clean the tank... Bettas are actually better off if you have NO gravel. Hope it helps!

it's usually for decoration ( the rocks on the bottom)
and if you do decide to add rocks buy the rocks that would bring out the color of your beta
good luck

if u don't want them to smell anymore, just boil them.(fish don't need them). u don't need the little 1's, but 1 bigger rock will be good. my Betta loves to sleep on it.

rocks are bad for fish(as a subtrate) because of the bulkyness they have little area for the cycling bacteria to grow so the fish poop slips inbetween the rocks and causes disese and ammonia build up.
