Well, first of all you don't need a bowl, you need an aquarium. Gold fish can get quite large with even the smaller fancy varieties getting to 7-8" long. You can easily start your young gold fish off in a 10 gallon tank with a filter and hood. Starter kits in this size are readily available at places such as Walmart and large chain pet stores for a very affordable price.

Also pick up a good brand of goldfish food. That will form the basis of his diet. You can also add to that with frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp (both available at the pet store) as well as green leafy veggies from your kitchen. This may seem over board, but goldfish really need a well vairied and well balanced diet. Goldfish are omnivores and require a fairly well balanced diet. About 40% protein, 25% fat and 35% carbohydrate. These should come from a variety of sources to give a proper balance of vitamins, minerals and micro nutrients.

Most any vegetable is good goldfish food assuming you soften it enough for the fish. Green veggies are particularly good.

Sugars are not really needed in a fishes diet and can basically be ignored. They are biologically cheap energy, but the fish will get all the quick energy it needs from the carbohydrates in the veggies.

As for fats and proteins, the best source is from things that grow in freshwater. Cold blooded animals need and store different amino acids than warm blooded animals and therefore things such as insect larvae, aquatic crustaceans and freshwater fish will offer your goldfish the best balance of fats, proteins and amino acids. Beef, chicken and pork should all be avoided if possible in favor of the more digestible and better balanced sources of proteins.

Here's a link to a website that will help you with understanding aquarium keeping a bit and guide you through the first few weeks of getting your tank set up and running well so that it will provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish.

Well for my first goldfish, i had just a bowl and some of that gravel at the bottom and they lived for over a year. When i got new fish, i got a 1 gallon tank. It came with an air pump and had a light in the lid, i had some gravel in there and a plant. A snail is also good to put in there. It kept the tank cleaner longer. When the fish got a little bugger, i moved them up to a 2 gallon tank, that came with the same things i listed above. A fish net is also good to have for when you change the water. That stuff and some goldfish food were all i had and my fish lived for a year or more at a time!

fish don't like bowls. they are actually bad 4 them. so i recommend getting a 10 gal tank and a filter system, a net (incase he dies or you need to clean the tank) and you also need food (its not hard to take care of fish and its also not expensive, so fish are excellent pets)

    Source(s): i have a fishie too!!!! :)

you dont need a filter for in s bowl but you do need to water changes and you need food for it they are very easy fish to take care of

Bowls are a big misconception, they are actually bad for the goldfish, you need a regular square 10 gal tank, with filtration.

And of course water treatment and food.
