Getting started on VST and/or Creating Music digitally?
Hello. I need to know if VST apps (like cubase) or programs like reason are the answers to my problems.
I'm looking for a PC application that allows me to plug my keyboard into the pc (I currently own a Roland xp-80 and a Triton LE) , and be able to record my music in different channels but more important, I'm looking for an app that allows me to add instruments (bought separately) or plugins that such application will recognize. I'm not sure if cubase or reason does this (I've read reason is more focused to electronic music, I'm more into soundtrack/instrumental music); mainly I want that instead of buying different synths all the time, just use one and then buy instruments that are compatible with the program I would record my music into. Is this possible? IF so, what exactly do I need? I heard I'm gonna need a new soundcard and Midi cables. I have very little experience with MIDI so I'm kind of lost in this matter. Thanks

Well, I hate to change what I said before, but an even better sequencer program (free) is called Reaper. I use Audacity as my wave editing program, but I now use Reaper as my sequencer and VST host. They allow you to download an unrestricted free version of the program from:
http://www.cockos.com/reaper/download.php
From there you can find the manual and read all about how to setup VST stuff. To actually find the plugins, use the following website:
They have pretty much every free and commercial VST out there in their database and they update it frequently. Good luck and like I said, try giving Reaper a try. It may take you a few days to learn but I promise you will have better control over your sound.
PS- For my VSTs I made a folder on my C: drive called Vstplugins. I just load all of my files there and then set that folder as my VST folder in Reaper. All you have to do is place the dll's in the folder that Reaper points to and you'll have them in your FX list! Good luck!
MIDI data is just digital note value and on/off data, it contains no sound data. You apply a VST instrument over your MIDI data and that's what makes the sound (sorry if that's too basic, but it can be tricky for some people).
You can search for an audio driver (free) called ASIO4ALL that allows for low latency times in recording that will allow you to more than likely use your current soundcard until you feel comfortable upgrading. If you don't have a MIDI interface, search online music stores for USB MIDI interfaces. They are not all that expensive these days and will give you MIDI in/out for your keyboard. Reaper should see this interface when you start it up.
This is all I can think of for now...

I don't know exactly what your talking about but nothing can replace the sound of a real keyboard. soft syn program crap sounds awful. They do have software keyboards that you can buy i have tons of them but never use them yuck! I have the xp-50 and the motif and a load of other sound modelers. That's what you should get sound modelers and expansion boards. Heres a good sound card = http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid... /Audity se at best buy
