The fastest, cheapest and easiest thing to do would be to add more RAM. Shoot for at least 512mb total but 1gb would be better. AMD chips will not work in Intel systems, they are physically different.

To answer your question. I would get more ram. It costs alot cheaper than a processor. And you can't just put a intel core 2 duo processor or amd turion processor in your computer because your motherboard is "probably" not designed for those processors. You will have to buy compatible motherboard to install the one of those processors. The cost is well over $400. Check to make sure you have a slot for memory. Your computer sounds old and may not have expansion slots. If you don't have expansion slots for memory, I don't know what else to tell you. My recommended answer: buy a new computer. The newer programs or applications today recommended more memory (ram), faster processors, bigger hard drives, and DVD player.

I would upgrade the CPU, but not to the core 2 duo. Check your mainboard's compatibilty list for processors. Right now a Prescott or Northwood P4 will give you tremendous bang for the buck over that Celeron. And yes, you do need another 256MB stick of RAM. Be sure to get the same type of RAM. Lastly, do consider reformatting your hard drive. Not for the timid, but ultimately necessary. Preserve your data carefully. Be selective on the Windows updates; they are most clogging. A hardware firewall plus Zone Alarm and being careful where you tread on the internet will leave you better off than all the Windows patches and antivirus software.

You can always add more RAM to get better performance
You cannot put the new processor in your old mainboard. They are not compatible.
. Buy the way the Turion processor is good but it is AMD made processor for Notebook computers. AMD will soon be taking back the fastest processor. Then it should go back to Intel then back to AMD again by July of 2008.

Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.
The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:
lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.
Good luck!
