something inexpensive that will make an impact is to cut out panels from cardboard boxes and cover with material off cuts can be purchased in many patterns and colours. Use tape to secure them at the back and presto you have a decoration which is not heavy so can be hung up with 2 sided glue tape. You can make any size or shape you like. You could even cut up old clothes and join pieces for your picture so good luck and have fun !

when we moved into our home it had a shabby bar. I got some coca-cola material and some black and white tile and made a coca-cola bar. Went to Target that was selling old coke pictures made out of metal. In your family room you can get some of those chairs where you sink into them and get some retro looking design covers for $10 at Target. Wallmart has many looking retro lamps and if you go to a place like "pic a part" or a place where they sell old car parts, you can get a car seat and use it for a couch out of a 57 chevy. It depends on what year you are going for and what movie or music theme. You could put old 50, 60 albums in a frame and put up as pictures. Pictures of Elvis Presley or flower power wall paper or beddings. Here is a good book to find what you are looking for: "Modern Retro: Living with Mid Century Modern Style"

Modern Retro is not about recreating a period feel. Instead, it shows how to take the best designs of the 1920s through 1970s. In recent years, mid-century modern furniture, glass, ceramics, and textiles have become hugely popular among those who appreciate the stylish contribution these pieces make to the contemporary home and Modern Retro will inspire you to create a look that combines these modern classics. This book covers interior styles from the Art Deco period to the 1970s home furnishings and contains enough good pictures of lovely interiors filled with retro furniture and makes for a great source of inspiration to help you decorate your home in a comfortable yet stylish modern retro manner.

Then go on DIY or TLC and look for ideas once you are sure what you want to have your space look like and see the many ideas they have inexpensive arts and crafts. You know TLC has the show "Trading Spouses" and it is pretty good with ideas that are inexpensive that look great. Good luck
