Overheating Problem - Better to use different Water/Antifreeze ratio?
Will using a different ratio of Water and Antifreeze help deal with cooling problems?
I have a 99 Dodge Dakota that overheats on long drives and hot days with the A/C on. I've had the thermostat, fanclutch, and belts replaced. It has boiled over on me 4 times in the last month, and I have always refilled with water only. I've also back-flushed the system and ran a radiator cleaner through. I'm willing to try anything before completely replacing the radiator.
Does the antifreeze/coolant solution provide better cooling abilities that water? Would using a 50/50 water to antifreeze ratio help control heat better than a 85-water/15-antifreeze ratio? I'll obviously go back to 50/50 before the winter, but I want to use the best solution for the hot summer months.

50/50 is what the manufactures on all my cars have told me. Check your manual.
Also get this checked out because it could be something that your knowledge of cars cant help you with and this could elevate into a much worse problem.
and you could also have a leak.

50/50 is always the best way to go Your vehicle is designed to run on that mix so could have some very minor temp differences however it should not cause the problem you describe. So now you have lots to do just in case you haven't tried some of this, Check your radiator buy viewing through the fins with flash light and make sure you don't have a lot of junk in there plugging up air flow. And make sure all of your shrouds are present and in place. Then if that is not the issue you may be experiencing early head gasket failure where the exhaust is escaping into the coolant ports, could be a water pump going bad. Of course i would check the water pump before trying a head gasket.

TRY shining a flash light engine off thru from fan clutch side to front. Have some move the flashlight around while you are looking from the bumper thru the grill. and a/c condencer you got to see light Look for garbage in the cooling fins between the radatior core tubes and smashed grasshoppers. Wash out with a garden hose nozzel back to front. IF clear your problem may be flow thru the radatior core or worse. Water pump head gaskets or something simple like an air pocket in the engine. AIr pocket can be removed by disconnecting the highest coolant hose and filling the system till coolant runs over. 50 / 50 good for winter 30/ 60 water good for heat of summer. You have to have some anti corrosion protection Don't go less than 30% coolant

your radiator is restricted, replace it. it's much cheaper to replace the radiator than a head gasket or an engine. the ratio of coolant would have little effect on cooling, in a properly working system. a 50/50 mix is best. over long drives with a restricted radiator the heat builds slowly until it boils over, driving around town slowly the problem usually won't show up. good luck.

Always use 50/50 mix---it raises the boiling point of plain water from 212 to 240 and helps lube the system as well as provide anti-corrosion. Make sure radiator fins are clear...make sure lower air dam below the bumper is not damaged, bent or missing...try adding a product like WaterWetter---lowers cooling system temps by 20-30 degrees---racers and motorhome owners use it...parts stores carry it or online.

you should only have to run a 50/50 mix in that one,you know its possible that the water pump is going bad on it,and that will cause it to run hot like that even though it isn't leaking it can still have the fins on the actual pump part of it getting worn out,and this wont circulate the coolant real good,i see more of that these days then i do bad radiators,but you could still have a core problem with the radiator ,but id check the coolant circulation in it ,its possible the pump may be going bad on it,good luck with it.

50/50 is best. water boils faster than coolant...and more is NOT better...85% anti will not work better..Replace waterpump...they ware out...the water has no lube in it [another reasion to use anti freeze] and the blades get smaller...looks good ,doesnt leak but may only work 75%!!... make sure truck is tuned withe correct spark plugs...a bad tune can cause compuiter to change timeing and make it run hot..

I'm in Arizona where it's 110 these days! I have my best luck with 100% Anti-Freeze! That's what I used in cold country also! Just keep your reservoir up to the full line with pure Anti Freeze! No mixing with water! Happy Father's Day!

I would say check to be sure your electric fans are working correctly before thinking you have a leak issue .Change the radiator cap out with a new one ,You can heat up while running on the highway provided the temperature is up outside ,(and worse driving across blacktop roads). You will have serious engine issues if you continue to drive it and keep running hot .

50/50 is always good, but I would get a brand name flush before filling it, and maybe get a flex fan to provide more air flow, and make sure the cooling vanes are clear.
