Are you sure there's nothing wrong with the battery backup? It sounds as if its the problem and not your computer. I've used several APC brand UPS battery backups and never had any problems with them. You might consider getting a new UPS.

I remeber having the same problem with my UPS once. The UPS was new and the batteries were fine, but the UPS had problems giving timely backup. When the power went out, my PC restarted instantly, and after that, the UPS provided backup. And when I switched off the mains myself, the UPS had no problems giving backup. I called in the service people, but I could not demonstrate my problem since each time I manually switched off the socket, the UPS worked fine. It was only during a power outage that this problem appeared. My problem was kind of fixed after one or two visits to the service center, but I have never been happy with that UPS. I am considering getting a new one.

What I think is happening is that the UPS is a little slow to respond and change the power supply from the mains to the battery backup when a power-cut occurs. This is why the PC restarts instantly and then continues to work on backup.

I suggest you call in the service people, give them a good explanation of your problem, and ask them to give it a thorough look over. If it doesn't solve your problem, you should consider getting another brand. APC makes good UPS which provide good-response backup.

Your UPS is not supposed to allow your computer to shut down when the power is a power failure. My UPS came with software that alerts me when there are power-drop or -loss events, and it switches to battery power. You need to contact the manufacturer.

    Read your own question!

Their IS a problem with the UPS

You are not testing it properly.

Power cuts Do not always occur instantly.

This is known as pulsing, ramping, spiking and multiple others.

A good UPS does not “kick in” the power is always supplied thru the UPS

Try asking the company who made the computer. They would figure it out probably.
